The New Year So Far…

My last post, I talked about how amazing 2015 was for me, and how much I was looking forward to what 2016 had in store; well, I’m happy to say that so far I’m happy with how the year is unfolding.  I continue to meet and shoot with some of the most wonderful women Colorado has to offer, and I just got back from my second trip to Las Vegas for WPPI.  Not only was the trip a much-needed break from the day-to-day grind here at home, but being able to meet and listen to industry leaders has been a welcome recharging of my soul.  Up next is Shutterfest in St. Louis in a couple weeks, and I anxiously look forward to what that will bring – as well as continuing to see what this year has to offer.

I want to thank the Beautiful, Sweet, and Talented Bianca Gaden for shooting with me again while I was in town – we got some AMAZING images!

One final note:  While at WPPI, I attended a lecture by one of the photographers I look up to (this guy is INSANELY AMAZING!) and as one of his give-away at the end of the lecture, he announced a fun little Instagram contest for the final items – one of two seats at one of his workshops.  As I was driving home from Vegas yesterday, he announced the two winners…one of which was ME!  Needless to say, I’m over the moon about this and can’t wait to attend his workshop later this year!  So, one last Thank You to Mr. Roberto Valenzuela for this WONDERFUL opportunity, and for being such an inspiration.  Oh, and below is my winning image for the contest – the goal was to get as ridiculous as possible while reading his new book and post to Instagram.

A Year in Review – Looking Back, Before Looking Ahead

While I’m only going to be primarily covering the past year, it was really about two years ago that I’d decided to delve back into photography with more than a half-hearted, occasional picking up of my camera.  That first year, I went from the rare instance of picking up my camera and knowing just enough to be dangerous — I knew the basics, but had never really messed with anything other than ‘natural/available light’ or on-camera flash — to attending workshops/meetups and learning more about how to make a good photograph; and while I still have a ways to go, I really have come far (I even wrote a post about it on my Facebook page, which was turned into a guest post on Skip Cohen’s blog here).

This past year, I’ve had the fortune and privilege to meet and shoot with some of the friendliest and most beautiful women in Colorado, as well as a few from other states.  I’ve also been fortunate enough to meet in-person, some of the industry leaders and top educators, and even managed to make some new friends along the way with other industry professionals.  I attended two photography conferences (where all this magic happened) — WPPI in Las Vegas and Shutterfest in St. Louis — and have been inspired to no end by all the talent and greatness I’ve had the privilege to hear speak and learn from at these conferences, as well as their online webinars/courses.

Looking back, it’s been a pretty good year overall – I’ve grown as a photographer and artist, had so many amazing experiences, and made many new friends.  I’ve had two images merit in a photography competition at Shutterfest, was mentioned in a blog post on Skip Cohen University and featured in another, and I was published in Empower, Ltd. Magazine.  In all honesty, Skip Cohen had it right when he said — and I’m paraphrasing — growing in this industry is less about the photography itself, and more about the relationships you build along the way – whether it be with other industry professionals, or clients.  I’m looking forward to 2016, and what it has in store for me.

And with that, as a reward for suffering through my prattling, I’ll leave you with a collection of images from my shoots over the course of the year.  Thank You again, to all the models, photographers, and other industry professionals I’ve had the distinct pleasure to meet and/or work with.  Here’s to a fulfilling, and exciting 2016.
